Axe Hill
Axe Hill was started by the late Tony Mossop and wife Lyn, at a remote site on the outskirts of Calitzdorp in 1993. The name of the vineyard originates from the prehistoric stone hand tools found on the farm, dating back over a quarter of a million years.
Calitzdorp has been acclaimed for its fortified wines for many years, and is known as "The Port Capital of South Africa." The unique micro-climate in the region is typically characterised by dry, arid conditions which add to the overall concentration of the Portuguese varietals.
Although other table wines are now being produced, Axe Hill continues to focus on creating exceptional port, which requires patience and commitment, a challenge which winemaker Mike Neebe successfully enjoys and embraces.
